If we are to survive as a species, we must change how we treat our planet now. This virtual high school class we will explore the content of a traditional Earth Science class and more, using a systems perspective. This class will leave participants armed with the knowledge they will need to deeply adapt to ecosystem and social system collapse.
We will look at how life (i.e., the biosphere) interacts with other Earth spheres: the pedosphere (soil), hydrosphere (water), and atmosphere (air) to form a self-regulating system that has earned the name Gaia. We also look at how Gaia is bounded and influenced by the inner Earth and heliosphere (the region around the sun including the solar system). We will focus our explorations on global climate change and other human impacts and how we, as the most powerful species on Earth, can adapt to these anthropogenic changes and engage in regenerative practices. Our permaculture perspective includes design principals and other concepts focused on humans re-learning how to act as part of nature rather than as its ruler.
This 10-week course will include weekly 90-minute group class meetings using Zoom, weekly student assignments building towards a final project, selected readings, and regular communication between each student and the course instructor via the Internet.
